General Science
About
Home
Calendar

Science is pervasive; there is
nothing that exists in this universe that is not governed by the
scientific principles. In general science, the student will learn of
some of the principles in three specific areas....earth science,
physics, and chemistry. Notes, assignments, and labs will be a
part of the course work, along with periodic quizzes and tests. There
will not be a cumulative test over each quarter's work, nor will there
be a cumulative test at the semester.
These areas will be
further divided into units. The tentative breakdown is listed with the
distinct possibility that there will be changes throughout the year.
Earth Science
beginning and continuation of the solar system/earth
forces that affect the surface of the earth
environmental issues
Physics
forces
simple machines
electricity
Chemistry
periodic table/reactivity/reactions
acid/base/salt
solutions
organic chemistry
Even
though there will be a textbook for this class; material will be drawn
from several texts. Therefore, it is vital that notes be taken during
the class period. Notes will be delivered using presentation software,
overhead, and handouts. Students will be required to maintain a three
ring binder with notes in one section. The binder will be collected
periodically and graded for an organizational grade. Quizzes and tests
will be returned to the teacher after the student has reviewed them.
Individual grades will be available on a weekly basis.
Expectations for the students:
- Students will respect each other and their surroundings.
Interfering with other students physically or verbally will not be
tolerated, nor will interference with any lab projects in the classroom
be tolerated.
- Students will come to class prepared to learn. Bring
notebook, pen/pencils, and a calculator. (If a calculator is needed and
you do not have one, you will do the computations mentally. A
calculator will not be provided for you. A simple calculator is the
best choice.)
- Use of another student's or author's work does
not enhance understanding of the science concepts. Copying will
result in loss of a grade for all involved; plagiarism will result in
the loss of a grade.
- Assignments are due at the beginning of the class.
- Assignments will be placed in the appropriate shelf of the
assignment stack and can be retrieved from the corresponding shelf
after they have been graded and recorded.
- Lab grades will be part of quiz grades unless otherwise indicated.
- Students will cover and maintain the cover of their textbook.
Expectations for the teacher:
- The teacher will be prepared for a learning experience each day.
- The teacher will respect the students.
- The teacher will grade and return assignments, tests, and quizzes in a timely manner. (Usually by the next day.)
