Applied Science

Life is based on the recognition of problems and the search to solve these problems. Earliest man was confronted with a multitude of problems. What would he eat? How would he shelter himself from the weather? How would he protect himself from predators? Solutions to these problems often determined whether the individual survived to pass along his characteristics or dies with the accompanying loss of genetic material.

Society has come a long way. We are still grappling with the same basic problems, but we have added many more in our search to satisfy not only our needs but also our wants. All of society's occupations and trades have come about because we have confronted our problems and found a solution. Using the physical laws of nature, humans have developed tools and objects to help us achieve an ever-increasing higher quality of life. In applied science, students delve into some of the problems and solutions that have resulted because all technology (applied science) is based on the search for solutions to problems.

There will be a minimum of notes in this setting; presentation software along with overheads will be used to project class notes. Projects, periodic quizzes and tests will chart student progress; daily work may consist of oral review, work on specific projects, and occasional written assignments from the text.

Students will be required to maintain a three ring binder with all of their notes and assignments. This binder will contain a section for notes, a section for returned assignments, a section for labs, and a section for handouts. It will be collected periodically ( and without prior warning!) and graded for an organizational grade. Quizzes, project evaluations, and test will be returned to the teacher after they have been reviewed.

Assignments may be turned in on traditional loose leaf paper or may be emailed to me using the following address ceische@esu7.org I will evaluate and grade these and return them to the student. Daily assignments are due at the beginning of the class period, not during or after class or throughout the day. Individual grades will be available on a weekly basis; all assignments, quizzes, project evaluations, and tests will be evaluated and returned in a prompt fashion, usually by the next day.

Student grades will be calculated using the following criteria:
    Daily assignments 25%
    Quizzes and Labs 25%
    Tests and Projects 50%

Projects and research papers will be evaluated using a rubric which is given to the student at the beginning of the assignment.

Daily assignments are due at the beginning of the class period, not during or after class or throughout the day. No late assignment will be accepted.
