Destination Imagination is a 'thinking on your feet' type of competition. Teams consist of 3-6 members. There are grade school, middle school, high school, and college teams. The teams have to compete in two different things.
The first part of the competition is an on site 'instant challenge.' The instant challenge can range from building things from toilet paper rolls and mailing labels to coming up with little stories using odd items given to them. Teams never know until they walk into the instant challenge room what it will be. They have 7-15 minutes to complete the challenge. They are scored on either physical accomplishments(going the farthest) or theatrical accomplishments(having a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end) or both!
The other part of the competition is their "team challenge." The team challenges change every year, but usually have an improvisation one, a wood building one, a technical one, and a couple of theatric ones.
Team managers are also called 'coaches' but you can't coach. The kids have to choose their own way to do their challenges - you just make sure they stay safe and maybe help with scheduling. Managers MUST attend the December 11 training and March 19 competition.
Appraisers are also called 'judges' but do anything from watching doors, time keepers, and judging other teams at regional competition. You can't judge your own team (of course) but can sometimes arrange to watch our team if the schedule allows. Appraisers MUST attend the Feb 19 training and March 19 competition.
Teams can be made up of 3 to 7 members. Each team needs one team manager and one or two (two suggested) appraisers. Team members MUST attend the March Regional Competition in order to go to State.

Competing in "Once Improv a Time" They had to research 6 fairy tales and make up a skit at competition using a character and a situation from two different tales. They had to make their own costumes and props out of newspaper and tape right at the competition. After only 1/2 hour of preparation, they have to present their mini play. They were judged on how well they worked together, how well they incorporated the fairy tale themes, and how neat their newspaper creations were. 7th Grade BOYS

Kevin J., Charlie M., and Brent P. Members 2nd place Region II - Norfolk - March 15 Competing in "viDIo Adventure"
These three boys came up with a three dimensional video game with levels in three different countries. They picked USA with the twin towers falling, Afghanastan with their cellular phone network, and Getting oil from Iraq. A remote control car that looked like an airplane went over obstacles in each level to get an award item. The goal of their game was world peace. They successfully went through all the obstacles at competition!
