Osborn's Class Attendance Policy
Much of the learning in a science class takes place during group discussions, activities, and the day-to-day participation in long-term projects. It is very difficult to "make up" the learning that takes place on these days. Many of our long-term projects require data collection on specific days and experiments that cannot be made up. It is therefore very important to be in class whenever possible.
Twenty percent of the student's grade comes from attendance and participation in class. Students earn up to 5 participation points each class day. These points come from:
- attending class.
- listening to instructions.
- being involved in discussions.
- being involved in activities.
- being on task.
A student that is absent must earn these 5 points by completing an Absence Form and making up missed work.
Students will have until the Friday of the week following the absence to turn in a completed absence form to the appropriate tray. Up to 5 participation points will then be given for the missed day. The participation grade will be entered as a zero until the form is turned in. Students that miss more than one day in a week may include all absences on a single absence form.
Any graded assignment(s) (tests, quizzes, lab reports, etc) missed or due on the day of the absence will fall under the "Make-up Work" policy of the student handbook - one day to make up work for each day of absence.
Students who miss an extended number of days due to a serious illness or injury will work with Mr. Osborn to determine an appropriate make-up work schedule. (Updated 7/06)
