Osborn's Grading Procedure - Grades 11 & 12
Grading Philosophy:
I cannot make you do well. Only you can decide to do well! My job is
to help you do well if you wish. If you get a good grade it is because
you chose to do the things that it took to get a good grade. If you
get a poor grade it is because you chose to do the things that it took
to get a poor grade. It is up to you how well you do in this class. I
would like to see each student get a good grade. However, I will not
force anyone to do well. You are at the age where you can decide if
you want to do well or not.
Students that normally do well:
- Keep a neat and organized notebook.
- Listen carefully to directions.
- Read carefully.
- Stay on task.
- Come to class prepared.
- Actively participate in class.
- Review for tests and quizzes.
Grading Scale:
The following is from the Student handbook:
A - 100-94 B - 93-86 C - 85-78 D - 77-70 F - 69-0
Credit:
Five
credits are given for each semester of class successfully completed.
Semester grades are calculated by taking the average of the 2-quarter
grades. Thirty science credits are required for graduation.
Quarterly Grades:
The
following procedure will be used to determine quarterly grades. All
graded items fall into one of the following types of grades. Each is
described below.
Test and Quiz Grades: These are tests and
quizzes that are given after the students have gone through a section
or unit. These are used to assess the students understanding of the
topic. These may be typical chapter or unit tests, state standard
tests, or section quizzes. They could also be formal lab report test
or demonstration type test. These grades will count 40% of your quarter grade.
Activity/Lab
Grades: These activities or labs are normally completed in class. They
generally require some type of data collection, write-up, or conclusion
that must be turned in. At times these may need to be completed as
homework. These grades will count 20% of your quarter grade.
Attendance/Participation
Grades: These grades are a subjective grade given once each week based
upon attendance and participation in class. It is a grade given based
upon students doing what they are supposed to be doing during class.
Attendance, attitude, and behavior all contribute to participation
grades. Each day will be worth 5 points. These grades will count 15% of your quarter grade.
Independent Points: Students will earn "independent points" during each quarter. Independent points are earned by conducting science related activities beyond the normal classroom requirements. This grade will count 10% of your quarter grade.

Daily Assignment Grades:
These typically include assignments like the questions at the end of a
section in the book or an outline covering a reading assignment. These
are generally assigned as homework and must be completed outside of
class. These grades will count 10% of your quarter grade.
Reading
Quiz Grades: Quizzes given after a reading assignment is assigned.
These quizzes may or may not be announced. They will cover the main
concepts or ideas presented in the reading assignment. These grades
will count 5% of your quarter grade.
Semester Averages:
Each semester average is determined by averaging the two-quarter averages for that semester.
Example:
First Quarter Average = 96.4
Second Quarter Average = 91.2
Semester Average = 96.4 + 91.2 = 187.6 187.6 / 2 = 93.8
Late Assignments:
- Most assignments will have a specific due date.
- Unless otherwise indicated, assignments are due immediately at the beginning of class the day it is due.
- Assignments not handed in at this time will be considered late.
- Students are not to "scramble" to finish an assignment at the beginning of class - these will also be considered late.
- Any
graded assignment missed or due on the day of an absence will fall
under the "Make-up Work" policy of the student handbook - one day to
make up work for each day of absence. These assignments will not be
considered late if they are handed in within the time permitted by the
makeup work policy in the student handbook.
- If an assignment is late:
- A zero will be recorded in the grade book for the late assignment.
- You may use your one free "Late Assignment Certificate" to turn in your late assignment.
- You may obtain a Late Assignment Form.
This form may be completed and turned in with your late assignment.
Depending upon the circumstances, you may or may not receive any credit
for your late assignment.
- No late assignments will be accepted after a week from the due date.
