Osborn's Cheating Policy

The purpose of an assignment is to help the student learn.  The act of thinking to complete the assignment is an important part of the learning process.  Therefore, it is important that students do their own assignments.  If a student copies another student≠s work to complete their assignment very little learning takes place.  This is cheating!

If a student is caught cheating, they will need to meet with Mr. Osborn after school to discuss the consequences.  Students will be required to inform parents of both the cheating and the consequences.  Consequences will be determined on an individual basis depending upon the circumstances.   Consequences may range from an immediate "0" to doing the assignment over for 1/2 credit.

The following describes various examples of possible cheating.

One student completes their homework and gives it to another student to copy.  Both students are cheating!

One student forgets to finish an assignment they almost have finished.  As class gets started the student asks a table partner for the last 2 questions.  The table partner get out their paper and shows the student the answers. Both students are cheating!

One friend asks another for help on an assignment.  The friend helps by letting the friend look at the assignment for "help".  This is cheating!  An example of really helping would be reading a section out of the book together and discussing what the section was about.  Then reading through the questions on the assignment, discussing the questions, and then discussing possible answers.

One student is way behind on a report because they have been super busy.  Another student who is finished says, "You can use my report to help you write yours".  Student one uses the report and changes things around a bit to write their report.  This is cheating!

Looking at another person's paper while taking a test or quiz.  Obviously cheating!  Dividers will be provided to separate students during tests - it is your responsibility to work within the area behind the dividers so that others can not see your paper.

There is no excuse for cheating.  If you don"t get an assignment completed there are other options.  You could:

Come in before school and discuss the assignment and why you are having trouble with it with Mr. Osborn.  You may get an extension.  For sure it will be better than cheating √ because your being honest!

Hand in the assignment unfinished.  You may get partial credit and you can finish it when you get it back.  In this case you are again being honest and may get some credit.
