1st Grade Classroom Information

Homework First graders need to practice the Spalding phonograms, vocabulary words and read aloud daily. They also will have a math practice sheet to help them review each day's lesson. They will eventually also have math facts flashcards to practice. We will begin having Spelling words second quarter. In January we begin our Dolch Word List tests. Students read a list of words and are timed. If they can do this in twenty seconds or less, they move on to the next list. If not, they keep practicing the same list for the following Friday's test.


Library First graders will have the opportunity to check out books from the library on Fridays. They may choose two books. These books must be returned by the following Friday in order to check out more books. I encourage each student to choose Easy Reader books that they can begin to read by themselves. It is especially important during Book It! that they remember to return their books so that they may check out new ones each week.


Birthdays If your child would like to bring treats on his/her birthday, this is fine. If your child's birthday falls in one of the summer months, we will celebrate their half birthday. For example, a June 6th birthday would be celebrated on December 6th as 6 1/2.


Book Orders Students will have the opportunity to order books several times throughout the year. Although I encourage as much reading with your child as possible, the ordering of these books is certainly optional. If you do make a book order by check, please make the check payable to me. Then I will send one check to cover the entire order. When sending book orders with your child, please put the order form and money in a sealed envelope with your child's name on the outside.


Show and Tell We will use a "show and tell pillowcase" for "Show and Tell" this year. It will be sent home with only one child in the class each day. Your child will be responsible for show and tell about once a month. Please encourage your child to bring ONE item only and to be prepared to tell about it.
